Heather Von St James is a mesothelioma survivor (one of the 2%) and a guest blogger for the Mesothelioma Cancer Alliance .  When Heather’s daughter Lily was just 3 1/2 months old, she was diagnosed with Mesothelioma Cancer.  As any mother would, Heather knew she needed to fight to be able to watch her daughter grow up.  She did everything it took, including missing the whole sixth month of Lily’s life while undergoing treatment in Boston.

The Reason Heather blogs about her experience is to help other mothers, or anyone who may be going through a similar situation. She wants her blog to be a means of inspiration and hope for those who need it.  Check out her blog at the Mesothelioma Cancer Alliance Blog.

Healthy Kids are Happy Kids

Nov-27-2011 By FixKids

Every parent wants their child to be healthy. They feel at ease when their children are in good health. What should you do in order for your kids to remain healthy? With the pressures of fast food and our relatively sluggish society, it is important to teach our children how to be healthy kids. This should come from the parents as the children will emulate them. The parents are role models to the kids and if they observe a wholesome lifestyle and are healthy then there is a good chance that their children will adopt the same habit.

Factors Determining the Health of your Kids

  • Genetics – these are traits passed on to a child from the parent during the process of formation. If the parents have healthy traits, the kids will definitely have the same and vice versa. Parents should teach kids about this in order for them to appreciate themselves.
  • Healthy eating – provide your children with healthy, balanced diets for them to develop and grow strong. Feed your children whole grains, fruits, lean proteins and vegetables as they are healthy foods for children. Don’t give your kids junk food, but if you must give them, do it minimally. Healthy eating children are ever energetic and strong to withstand many diseases.
  • Exercise – encourage your kids to take part in exercises. Don’t let your kids be involved only in computer games but let them carry out physical exercises. This will make them fit and enable them build healthy bodies. This is because by exercising, they sweat thus eliminating waste products from the body, which might render them sick. If they don’t like sports, let them take part in any other form of exercising such as biking or roller skating.
  • Addictions – try to be frank with your kids and give them advice on the various addictions that might render them unhealthy such as smoking, gambling, drugs, and alcohol. Honesty is one of the ways to be healthy for kids.
  • Sleep – kids need a good nights rest in order for their brains and bodies to grow effectively. When they get enough sleep they are able to relieve all tiredness thus making them fresh and more attentive in their activities. Hence parents need to apply a good sleeping routine. This can be achieved by switching off the TV and computers at a consistent hour to enforce the routine.
  • Mental Health – talk and relate to your children in a polite manner that will not cause any stress on them. This is because when you harass children, they get anxious hence are unable to concentrate on their activities. This leads to lack of joy in whatever they do, including eating food hence poor health. Avoid doing anything that is likely to bring about psychological trauma to the child. Also teach the kids how to avoid or deal with situations that are likely to affect them emotionally.
  • Bodily Changes – it is important to educate your children on the various changes that they are likely to encounter as they grow especially when they are approaching the puberty stage. Eating habits alter when they hit the teenage mark. Ensure healthy foods are consumed and continuing instilling the benefits of good food.

These are some methods that will promote health for your child. Remember, a healthy kid is a happy kid who will make for a happy home.
